Sony: Xperia of 2020 would have a perforated screen like the Galaxy Note 10

The Xperia of 2020 could be the first smartphones from Sony to have a hole in the screen like the Galaxy Note 10. If the manufacturer has remained faithful to the choice to do without a notch or a screen perforated, a new patent suggests that its next smartphones will conform to the current market trend.

Sony Xperia 2020

The 2019 Xperia 1 had much thinner edges than its predecessors. However, Sony has maintained enough space on the top to accommodate the front sensor. The brand could go even further by completely eliminating the borders on the top of the screen with the Xperia of 2020, in this case the high-end Xperia 3. In any case, this is what a patent indicates that presents a new version of the brand's user interface. It’s the Let’s Go Digital site, always on the lookout for this kind of information that discovered the document. The latter was put online on December 19 in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database.

Even though the patent does not cover the hardware part of the device it presents, the user interface reveals details on the direction that Sony smartphones could take next year. Indeed, as you can see in the diagrams at the end of the article, the icons representing WiFi, the battery level, but also the time are almost glued to the upper edge at the top right. This positioning of the status icons added to the design of the smartphone clearly indicates that the interface is designed for a borderless model, at least on the top.

Several options available for Sony
The space left on the upper edge would be too small to accommodate the front sensors. Sony would therefore be forced to give in to market trends by opting for either a perforated screen, a notch or a camera with a sliding mechanism. The first possibility is the most plausible from our point of view and corresponds to the hypothesis put forward by Let’s Go Digital. The site has also created a rendering inspired by patent information. It gives us an overview of what the smartphone might look like with a hole in the screen, but also the 21: 9 format adopted by the brand in 2019.

All this obviously remains an assumption and there is nothing to indicate that Sony will actually choose the design presented in the patent diagrams. As a reminder, in addition to the Xperia 3 (or Xperia 2), the manufacturer is also preparing a mid-range smartphone compatible with 5G, a Benchmark of which appeared in the GeekBench database a few days ago. The brand's first models should be formalized at MWC in Barcelona next February.
